Common Pests in North Carolina

Properly identifying a pest is the first and most important step to take to prevent or eliminate an infestation. Rest assured that our licensed technicians have the knowledge and equipment to effectively identify an infestation. Our professional treatments help ensure your pest problem is gone and stays gone.

Ants

Perhaps the most frequently encountered pest, ants are particularly frustrating when they build unsightly mounds in a yard or appear indoors in large droves in search of a meal. Ants can range from harmless, like odorous house ants, so named for the scent they produced when squished, to harmful. Fire ants are known for their painful bites and stings, causing harm to humans and pets, while carpenter ants destroy wooden parts of homes to make their colonies. There are many different ant species that can invade a home, and each has its own unique habits and diet. Our technicians can easily pinpoint which ant is present on your property and craft a personalized treatment plan to get rid of them.

Termites

Termites are destructive insects known for causing millions of dollars in property damage every year. The most common species is the subterranean termite which lives underground and gains access to a home through its foundation. They can silently grow their population into the hundreds of thousands without intervention. Because they feed on wood, a large termite colony can cause costly structural damage. Our termite experts can effectively find the colony, wipe out the population, and protect your property with preventative perimeter treatments which can last a decade.

Millipedes

In our area we have millipedes. They are primarily scavengers feeding on decaying organic matter. They will occasionally feed on dead insects, They do not infest structures but during mass migrations that can be triggered by excessive moisture or drought, they may accidentally find there way inside of your home through even the smallest of entry points such as weep holes and pipe openings. They will usually die quickly from dehydration and that is why you will see them curled up into little balls on the floor. The easiest way to deal with them is simply by vacuuming. This is even mentioned in the NPMA Field Guide as the most acceptable means of control on the interior. Pesticide application has little to no effect due to limited exposure time. Five suggestions to decrease the chance of a millipede migration coming through your home are:

  1. Be sure to keep the moisture levels in your crawlspace and basement at normal levels
  2. Dethatch your lawn annually
  3. Keep accumulations of leaves, firewood, and other debris away from your foundation
  4. Water your lawn in the morning so that the grass will dry throughout the day
  5. Keep the lawn mowed closely and edge the lawn to promote quicker drying

Learn more about pests common to our area:

Carpenter bees

Carpenter bees are another pest notorious for damaging wood. These insects excavate and tunnel inside wooden lawn furniture, fences, decks, poles, doors, railings, and windowsills. This bee is about an inch long, which can be frightening, but they are not aggressive and only the females sting if they have been disturbed. Our pest control team has a proven method of eliminating these pests: a thorough inspection to identify their active areas, locating the galleries where they reside, treating the gallery entrances with powerful insecticides, and sealing the holes they drilled.

Bed bugs

Bed bugs are tiny brownish-red pests that invade homes when unknowingly picked up in your belongings while traveling or from an out-of-town visitor. They survive by feeding on human blood, usually at night. Initial infestations can start in bedrooms, but without intervention, can grow into the hundreds or thousands or insects that spread throughout the home. Summit Pest Solutions specializes in bed bug control and prevention; we can perform a deep inspection of your home to determine the severity of the infestation and implement a multi-layered treatment approach that will eliminate adult bed bugs, nymphs, and eggs.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches can be a difficult pest to eliminate because of their reproductive habits and persistence. Both German and American cockroaches are common in our area. German cockroaches are smaller, at only 1.5 centimeters long. They are tan to black with two darker stripes running down their backs. American cockroaches, on the other hand, are much bigger, ranging from an inch to about two inches. They are typically reddish-brown colored and can fly short distances. These pests will eat just about anything and are active mainly at night. Signs of an infestation include finding live cockroaches at night near food sources; seeing egg capsules, droppings, or insect parts; and finding dead roaches. Our professionals can use baiting, dusts, and pesticide treatments to eliminate an infestation.

Mosquitos

These irritating insects are common across the world. North Carolina is home to a host of species, the five most common of which include: common house mosquitoes, yellow fever mosquitoes, common malaria mosquitoes, Asian tiger mosquitoes, and gallinippers. As some of their names might suggest, mosquitos are well known for spreading diseases when they feed on human blood. Their bite is also irritating, causing red, swollen, and itchy welts.

Mosquitos thrive in a warm and humid environment, which is why they are most active in spring and summer. They lay their eggs in standing water, which is why the first step in preventing an infestation is to ensure that you do not have any containers, birdbaths, puddles, or other places where water can collect.

Mice

House mice are a destructive pest and a health risk. They contaminate food and cause structural damage to wires and drywall due to their constant need to gnaw. Mice can multiply their population quickly so even a couple of mice can soon become a much larger population without professional intervention. Our methods of rodent control include lethal and non-lethal traps, rodenticide baits, and exclusion measures, depending on your preference.
